The Badloves

The Badloves

The liner notes of The Badloves’ multi-platinum debut album, Get On Board, started:

“Some years are like that: too busy, too distracted, too fuzzed out. You miss things. Great music passes you by. Then, years later, you find it.”

The Badloves released just two studio albums before taking some time out.
Their debut album “Get On Board” spent a massive 69 weeks in the charts , peaked at number 5 and went double platinum; delivering 5 hit singles in, “Lost”, “Memphis”, “I Remember”, “The Weight” (w Jimmy Barnes), “Memphis” and “Green Limousine”.

After extensive tours in Australia and Europe, The Badloves released their second album in 1995, “Holy Roadside” to critical acclaim, further ARIA nominations, and another string of hit singles in “Slave”, “Barefoot Bride”, “Living Thing” and “Caroline”, establishing them as one of this country’s premier acts.

The band never officially broke up back then. There was no farewell tour. “I think we were just tired,” Michael adds. “Those years were so intense; it’s a bit of a blur. We just didn’t have any balance in our lives.”

As author Andrew Masterson wrote on the back of The Badloves debut single, Lost: “Knob-twiddling wizardry has its place in music, but its influence will never be as strong, or as enduring, as the sounds produced by the classic combination of two guitars, bass, drums and a mega-whomping Hammond organ … The Badloves both continue and extend the grand tradition of such music, pushing out a sound that would have seemed quite at home at Muscle Shoals in 1967, while remaining as fresh and original as tomorrow.”

They are already a part of Australian music history having become a household name and influencing a generation of musicians and music lovers.

Inspired by the past, Michael Spiby reformed The Badloves again in 2015 and they are a band that’s very much focused on the future.

“It feels like we’re starting again,” Michael smiles. “Which is very exciting.”

Babylon Circus

Babylon Circus

Used to set the stage on fire all around the world, The most explosive live band ever is back with a brand new album and brand new show

From Paris to Damas, from New York to Moscow, they toured the world several times, with more than 1500 concerts in 30 countries. The 9-piece big band is back in the country with their ska, gypsy, rock, vaudevillian antics, dancehall & reggae music. Singing in French and English and mixing some raucous punk and swing into their epic sound, this energetic and theatrical group never fails to get people up and dancing – sometimes even on the stage.

“These guys had the entire crowd on their feet, jumping, moshing, singing and grooving like crazy in one of the most mad and enjoyable crowd frenzies I’ve ever experienced. They were truly amazing.” (Rip It Up)

The band dates back to high school, when singer and guitarist David Baruchel teamed up with drummer Manuel Nectoux. The pair moved to Lyon, surrounded by music and sharing their love of greats like The Specials, The Clash, Bob Marley and Serge Gainsbourg.

When David and Manu discussed what this new album should be about, they soon decided on the theme of change: from your thirties to your forties; from community life to living as a couple or on your own; from prolonged adolescence to fatherhood; from accident to recovery; from the pure and simple protest of punk to the powerful lyrics of rock.

And that’s the thrilling high-wire act Babylon Circus performs so well – somehow combing rock, their first musical love, with a French brand of reggae, the natural heir to ska, skank rock and rocksteady. That’s also one of the reasons for their phenomenal success, because they represent a kind of link between generations.

The band is now back to full strength and indeed sounds absolutely unstoppable. Everyone is writing and performing better than ever, along with special guests including Leeroy (ex-Saïan Supa Crew) and Polo, the tireless singer with the wonderful Satellites from 1985 to 1993.

Another chapter in a story of lasting friendship – one that never stops.

JJ Grey & Mofro

JJ Grey & Mofro

” When you take eight formidable musicians including sax, trumpet and organ players and throw them into one giant brew of Swamp Rock, with a pinch of Blues, a touch of RnB and a whole lot of Soul, lord knows you’re in for something evocative” / “Thrusting, banging and slapping that music maker on top of his expressive vocals, along with the bands tight timing was almost too good to handle” – Ultra Underground
“A masterful performance” – Oxford American

JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must— you see that the man is fearless.
Grey began touring as Mofro in the late ’90s, with a lyrical directness, and backbeats that crossed Steve Cropper with George Clinton, as his fan base grew from a modest group of loyal initiates into something resembling a national coalition.
Grey’s new release Ol’ Glory captures the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. “I wanted that crucial lived-in feel,” Grey says of Ol’ Glory, and here he hits his mark.
On the new album, Grey and his current Mofro line-up offer grace and groove in equal measure, with an easygoing quality to the production that makes those beautiful muscular drum-breaks sound as though the band has set up in your living room.
This is a rare and true treat for Australian audiences – don’t miss it!

Ash Grunwald

Ash Grunwald

Ash Grunwald drew attention as a solo artist with the release of his first album, Introducing, leaning heavily on traditional blues, but it was his second album I Don’t Believe released in April of 2004, that would change his state of play. It was his first album – of many to come – to graft technology onto the deeply rooted foliage of the Delta swamp.

In 2015 Grunwald continues with his commitment to evolve and to doing so with more mindfulness than ever before. Taking off from the same co-creation ethos of Guargantua – a collaboration with Scott and Andy from The Living End, Ash brought in Ian Perez keyboardist for Wolfmother and Pete Wilkins, former drummer for Blue King Brown to work on his brand new, forthcoming album NOW. The effortlessly gifted pair built the launch pad for Ash’s denotative sonic boom, enabling him to explore the lose-yourself-sounds of psychedelic blues using synth rather than stringed bass. Keeping it old-school, the gents jammed it out live, forming a wall of sound as abundant in clout as it is in groove. Standing behind the richness and warmth of the old Neve desk was famed American Record Producer Nick DiDia: who’s philosophy sits firmly in the power of performance and whose name is most commonly strung together in the same sentence as Springsteen’s. Having worked closely also beside Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam, Powderfinger and many other legends, what Nick brought to Ash, above all else, was an intense focus on the structure of a great song.

The result is an album with immense force; strongly political, rumbling from the depths of internal rage. It is sonic thunder that wears all the suffering and the anger of the blues but does not forget for a beat that if you don’t get up sometimes and shake that shit off, if you don’t take a moment to look across the dancefloor and lose yourself in that boy meets girl moment, your heart’ll harden and you’ll lose sight of all the beauty you’re fighting for. NOW is due out in 2015.

Having well and truly conquered his homeland with endless touring resulting in a reputation of not-to-be-missed rocking live shows, Ash has shrunk the world with familiarity, making the entire globe his home. NZ, the UK, sold-out tours in Canada and a pioneering trip of America in 2014 with Xavier Rudd; every show, every tour continuing to feed the ravenous beast of Ash’s unparalleled creativity and his unbridled spirit of diversity.

13 years since the release of that first blues record and hundreds of thousands of bodies shaken since, Ash welcomes you as always to strive toward life’s greatest mission amongst the chaos and the challenges – the presence of good times, the energy for action and the possession of a happy heart.

The Beards

The Beards

The concept of The Beards is simple – a rock band that exclusively perform songs about just one subject: Beards.
Forming in 2005 to play just one show in their hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, the band quickly realised that their unique concept was in hot demand. With the release of their self-titled debut album, and follow-up album Beards Beards Beards, The Beards began a relentless touring crusade to spread their pro-beard message, playing sold-out shows across Australia, festival appearances including Big Day Out, Falls Festival and Woodford Folk Festival, and of course their now legendary appearance at the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships in Anchorage, Alaska.
A cult following was quickly and firmly established, and the release of their 3rd LP Having a Beard Is The New Not Having a Beard in 2011 propelled the band even further into the spotlight. The album was nominated for an ARIA award, and lead single You Should Consider Having Sex With a Bearded Man cracked Triple J’s Hottest 100, as well as being nominated for one of the nation’s top songwriting awards, the APRA Song Of The Year. With international attention growing rapidly, the band headed overseas, showcasing at SXSW in Austin Texas and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, before heading to Europe where they have drawn capacity crowds across the UK, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and The Netherlands.
With their filmclips now having amassed over 5 million views on YouTube, and their latest release, 2014′s The Beard Album, being described by the band as “our beardiest album yet”, The Beards continue in their ceaseless journey to make the world a more beard-friendly place.
Bearded men, put down those trimmers – the Beard Revolution has come.

Tijuana Cartel

Tijuana Cartel

As the corner stone of Australia’s ‘east meets west’ electronic scene, Tijuana Cartel have a knack for blending layers of rich, intricate atmospheric soundscapes with pounding bass and luscious vocals to form an electronic beats tapestry that will cut through to your very soul.

Simply, there isn’t another band doing what they do. Having spent the last decade mixing in influences that haven’t been fused in the past, their penchant is for Middle Eastern scales, beats that get a floor moving and a general Psychedelic approach in song structure and ethos. Not married to one genre or another, they happily change direction in search of new flavors and inspiration, whenever the moment takes them there.
