Australian platinum-selling hip-hop artist Illy premiered his new single Papercuts feat. Vera Blue on triple j yesterday and confirmed he is currently finishing off his 5th studio album with Grammy winning producer M-Phazes (Eminem, Kimbra, Meg Mac). He will also be performing at this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival. Papercuts is available this Friday 8th July. Listen to the track now.
“I’ve been holding on to Papercuts for a while, and I’m really excited that it’s finally coming out,” said Illy. “It’s a different vibe to anything I’ve done before. I love that about it. A lot of rap music’s been uninspiring lately. I wanted to make an album that didn’t sound like anything else out, and bring back those big moments and big songs that make albums stand out. I can’t wait to share the rest of this one.”
A career which kick-started in 2009 with debut LP Long Story Short has now turned into 4 albums, 7 consecutive triple j Hottest 100 entries, a platinum single, multiple gold records and an ARIA award by 2015. During all this he also found time to start his own record label, ONETWO, on which his most recent album, Cinematic, and his forthcoming album will be released.
He kept busy on the road as well, honing his live show with numerous headline tours, a flurry of regional dates and appearances at major festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Groovin The Moo, a headline slot at Festival of the Sun and a standout performance at triple j’s One Night Stand in 2014.
At the back end of 2015, Illy gave us a sample of what he’s been working on with his single Swear Jar, which landed the #39 spot in this year’s triple j Hottest 100.
