'Watussi' is Cuban slang for the most handsome man at the party. It sums up the confidence and go-for-it attitude that have marked this band as something special from the beginning, even more so in recent months.
It’s been a short journey but an exhilarating one for Watussi since the release of their debut long-player, "Tequila, Sangre y Fuego" at the end of ’07. Acclaimed for fully capturing the high-octane excitement of a live Watussi gig, it was not just a favorite with indie supporters like FBi Radio, Triple J and 3RRR – the album was also picked up for Australia-wide airplay by ABC Radio National, cementing the band’s hard core live reputation by spreading the sound coast to coast.
National tours, two spectacular sets at WOMAD in Adelaide, live concert recordings, a debut film clip, and several other prestige festival gigs, including the Famous Speigeltent, have all followed. The album also garnered an ARIA nomination in ’08, a great honour from the Australian recording industry. The band was also invited by the legendary Gibson guitar company to accept a sponsorship, putting Watussi in the elite Gibson rock club.
Most exciting of all has been the band’s three-week tour of South Korea and Japan, playing festivals, TV shows and clubs. 2009 has already eclipsed the previous year with performances at Byron Bay’s Blues and Roots Festival, The Sydney Opera House and a return to Asia in July. Plans for a second album are also on the way…
