Weathered despite only being 19, Rockhampton native Upile Mkoka possesses a natural storytelling gift and cross-generation appeal. Accompanying his soulful voice with deft acoustic fingerpicking, the young singer-songwriter has mastered the art of live performance and is eager to share his talent with the world.
Music runs in Upile’s family – he picked up guitar at 11 after watching his dad play and began gigging with local alt-rock bands he formed with friends at 13. In 2010, Upile released debut EP “Journey On Foot” – which he co-produced with a friend and from which “In My Head” became his calling card of sorts.
Having gradually discovered the joy of playing self-penned songs at intimate venues, the young artist began doing solo shows in his hometown, eventually travelling to Mackay, Brisbane and Toowoomba (where he played Easterfest in 2011 and 2012) and fine-tuning his live craft along the way.
After recording with Josiah Birrell, creator of Triple J’s recent crush ‘GOVS’, his sophomore self-titled EP is on the horizon due for a mid-year release and the future has never looked brighter.
